Nympheas Is Greening and Winning

“ Like modern farmers, we cultivate ‘bacteria’ as a daily task,” said Nympheas CEO Mr. Eric Lin, making a clever comparison referring to bio cellulose masks, their star product.

The key material, bio cellulose (BC), is produced via fermentation of a specific bacteria strain and is eco-friendly and compatible with human body. Nympheas first attempted applying BC on facial masks 6 years ago. BC, a glucose polymer, has nano-fibers that provide breathable tight adhesion and can siphon off sebum from skin. That’s why Nympheas’ BC-based “hydro-velour” masks became an instant hit.

With orders pouring in, supply fell short in pursuit of quality. Unlike its counterparts, Nympheas uses a single strain culture to harvest a thin BC film for mask formation without extra trimming in a 21- day process. Thanks to its R&D efforts, Nympheas has increased production capacity from 0.3 million pieces per month to 0.5 million.

Yet, the increase in production was accompanied by an average of 20 tons of waste per day. In hopes of “greening” the production process, Nympheas joined the MOEA’s green innovation project, ”GIANT”, for promising SMEs. After a year or so, with consultation assistance from the government, Nympheas was able to fully achieve green production.

The consultants advised Nympheas to recycle the nutrient-rich culture fluids and turn them into fertilizer. Field tests performed on cucumbers showed the fertilizer doubled the crop yields and increased the fruit size while bringing in harvest by a month early. Today, the sterilized culture fluids are all repurposed in agricultural application.

Once waste, scraps of BC fabrics have also reclaimed their value. After simple scrap processing, they are recycled into excellent facial cleansers or handmade soaps.

Besides achieving near-zero waste, Nympheas is on the way towards Type II ecolabel certification, which is expected to well boost orders in today’s ecoconscious market.

After success in OEM service, Nympheas is eyeing its own brand-building. CEO Mr. Lin is confident that the company is heading toward an ever-brighter future.
